Step 1: Earth Day Details

Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
We began our presentation by asking the kids how long they thought it took for one individual water bottle to decompose entirely. We continued to ask them questions relating to our topic which engaged them in the subject, allowed them to voice their personal opinions, and created a sense of involvement. Following their guesses, we provided them with the real answers and most kids were surprised. We then described the problem and explained how throwing away re-usable materials is detrimental to the environment. Then we described numerous options for re-using materials. After giving them many choices, we provided them with water bottles that had already been prepared and allowed them to fill the bottles with soil and choose a seed, their options were carrots, radishes, and peppers. When they were finished preparing their water bottle pots, we asked to explain what "re-purposing" meant in their own words. We utilized the last few minutes by permitting the kids to ask us questions concerning the topic, their plants, or any environmental related subject.
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
I would provide time for a snack break for the kids because toward the end of the day, they were becoming extremely restless and unfocued. By providing time for them to re-group, they would be more engaged in the activities they encounter following their break. The fair could also be improved by having the elementary teachers walking around and observing the students in order to prevent students from misbehaving or interrupting presentations.
Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs help the environment by using no electricity, no batteries, and last longer than other self-luminous exit signs. Gambassa's "Energy efficiency and exit signs" project curriculum teaches students how to generate income by using available utility retrofit rebate programs to replace incandescent exit signs. Earn while you learn.
