Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
I arrived at the Temescal Wash, where I signed papers and was briefly introduced to the event. I teamed up with Marissa Verdi, and we grabbed bags and gloves and headed off to pick up trash. We picked many plastic bags out of plants, found many bottles, pulled a few clothing items out of the ground, and generally meandered around the Wash until our bags were full, at which point we headed back to the road. We threw our bags away, grabbed new ones, and headed in the other direction. Very soon, we saw Mujghan Ahmad, who we helped dig part of a shopping cart out of the ground. After that was thrown away, Marissa and I found a half-buried shopping cart, which we spend much time digging out. Cynthia Ruiz and a girl from Centennial, Joyce, joined us and sped up the process greatly. When we finally got the cart out, the four of us went out and picked up some more trash on the other side of the road for awhile. Then, we went back to the road for pizza and free t-shirts.
What were your accomplishments?
I helped clean up a very trashy area. Also, digging out the shopping cart took a lot of work and I am very proud of what I did there.
What did you learn?
I learned what happens to a lot of the trash that people just let go. I did not realize how trashy waterways get, how much trash could accumulate there. I found it amazing that people could let so much trash end up in one place like that.
