4 hours
Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
I took on the task of picking up any harmful debris and/or plastic in the City's watershed. I had to use gloves to prevent contamination from any of the trash. Some of the things we had to look for specifically were nondegradable pollutants and resource, shopping carts, recyclables such as tires and other things.
What were your accomplishments?
I accomplished digging out three shopping carts, 8 large trash bags full of plastic and other items, and a child's playhouse that was lodged under layers of rocks. I accomplished cleaning out rubbish that could have potentially destroyed one of the most valueable ecosystems of the world: the coastal zone.
What did you learn?
I learned that there is a lot of trash that gets dumped into drainages and eventually flows into the ocean, which can decimate the homes of some of the most important species on Earth. I learned that we need to take good care of these species because their high biodiversity is the most valuable thing on Earth. The animals of coastal zones and oceans provide for a major supply of resources and food for humans, so we have to take care of them and prevent them from extinction.

Other Notes
This was a great experience. I was amazed to see the massive amount of trash that accumulates in city watersheds. I'm glad i got to be a part of something that could help better the environment.

Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs help the environment by using no electricity, no batteries, and last longer than other self-luminous exit signs. Gambassa's "Energy efficiency and exit signs" project curriculum teaches students how to generate income by using available utility retrofit rebate programs to replace incandescent exit signs. Earn while you learn.
