Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
During my volunteer time, we picked up many bags of trash. There were random objects strewn upon the ground covered in mud in many places that we looked, though most of the trash, which was grocery bags or trash bags, was attached to many of the plants in the area. There were also many other more random items. There were many articles of clothing, a few tires, and shopping carts. In the wash, in nearly every area that we looked there were shopping carts lodged in the ground. Some were completely submerged, while others were easily moved. My companions and I had gotten one of these easily moved shopping carts and brought it to the giant dumpster that was there for the trash. My associates and I simply walked around and picked all the trash we could. Once our bags were nice and taut with what we had picked up, we would simply return to the the main area, put our bags in the dumpster. We then would pick up a few more bags and head out again to explore and find places we may have missed cleaning up. It was hard work because of the terrain. Some of the land would be rocky and hard, and the other parts were wet and slippery.
What were your accomplishments?
I accomplished cleaning up most of the area I covered. Personally, I'm most proud over the fact that I had helped pick a shopping cart out of the mud, even if many people did that. I also picked up a lot of large pieces of plastic. I also accomplished learning more about my community and the environment around me.
What did you learn?
During my experience i actually learned what a wash is. I didn't know that it was a place that flooded when it rained. I also learned that much of the trash from the city is washed into it. Most of this trash is plastic grocery bags and other non degradable things. These washes are used by the homeless to live in. This contributes to the pollution in the wash.

Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs help the environment by using no electricity, no batteries, and last longer than other self-luminous exit signs. Gambassa's "Energy efficiency and exit signs" project curriculum teaches students how to generate income by using available utility retrofit rebate programs to replace incandescent exit signs.
