Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
After awaking extremely early in the morning on a Saturday morning I reported for duty at the Temescal Wash and cleaned up trash from both sides of the watershed area. It was our responisibility to clean it as much as possible to allow for a cleaner water supply and litter free area.
What were your accomplishments?
I spent most of the time with Taylor Mahaffey and Pooja Patel picking up all manner of litter such as many plastic bags, straws, cups, and food wrappers. I found one Capri Sun pouch perfectly preserved beneath the cracked floor previously under water. Amazing how the sand had preserved it perfectly while the rest of the trash was faded and tarnished from being out in the sun so long. There were at least two or three shopping carts we spotted but being three girls, we couldn't get them to budge and left them in their spots only to see them picked up with ease later by others, stronger than us... go figure. We also found this giant leafy seaweed structure that reached far above our heads covered in trash that we tried to clean but due to short stature we could only reach so far up it's expansive leafy branches.
What did you learn?
I learned that during rainfall the rain runs down in a certain direction picking up all manner of trash in the streets and eventually gets to this waterway where bushes and seaweed type structures collect the trash, however some trash makes it farther along and most likely to our ocean where it can not be cleaned up with any sort of ease. Also primitive areas like this are homes for partying teens and homeless people, which is certainly not acceptable and very dehumanizing.

Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs help the environment by using no electricity, no batteries, and last longer than other self-luminous exit signs. Gambassa's "Energy efficiency and exit signs" project curriculum teaches students how to generate income by using available utility retrofit rebate programs to replace incandescent exit signs.
