Bobby Elliot's Notable Species Report
Report:

Most Invasive

The red imported fire ant is the most invasive species because of is huge negative impact on the united states and it's ability to sting. They also build mounds and underground colonies that are up to 3 feet high. they also move their nests into equipment and electrical devices that are near the ground. They get inside curcuit breakers and fuse boxes and chew on the coverings over the wires, eventually causing a short curcuit. Within a year, a queen red imported fire ant can produce over 100,000 red imported fire ants, all capable of stinging. They also aggressively attack other kinds of insects with in their area, as well as larger animals like baby birds. These ants are hard to get rid of because they are not affected by pesticides, cleaning products, or water. (7)

Common Name: red imported fire ants
Scientific Name:  Solenopsis invicta
Where on Earth is it a problem: southern states(Texas to South Carolina), california
Where did it come from?:  south america. probably hid in the soil of imported plants

Most Endangered

The Hawksbill turtle is a beautiful sea creature that is typically found in coastal reefs, rocky areas, estuaries and lagoons. An adult Hawksbill Turtle can weigh up to 100 to 155 pounds. their diet consists of sponges, anemones, squid and shrimp.

They are listed as endangered under the  U.S. Federal Endangered Species Act. (5)These creatures are harvested for their prized shell, also known as tortoise shell.(5) their shell is used to make hair ornaments, jewelry and other decorative devices. International trade in tortoise shell has decreased. (6) the meat and eggs of a Hawksbill are used for food in some countries as well, eventhough their meat is considered toxic.  There are about 22,900 nesting females left on the Earth. (5)

Common Name: hawksbill turtle
Scientific Name: Eretmochelys imbricata
Where does it live?:  Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans from Japan to Australia and the British Isles to southern Brazil. Lives near coral reefs

Favorite Keystone

The american alligator can live from 65 to 80 years. an average adult female is around 9.8 feet tall while a male can range from 13 to 14.7 feet tall. They have short legs and an armored muscular flat tail. these creatures can not only swim, but they can also walk, and crawl on land. They are hunted for their meat and skin.

the american alligator is considered a keystone species by many. They control populations of prey species such as fish, turtles, snakes and small mammals. They also create peat and alligator holes, which are invaluable for other species. These creatures are also good indicators of environmental factors, such as toxin levels. (4)

Common Name: the american alligator
Scientific Name: Alligator Mississippiensis
Where does it live?:
found from southern virginia-north carolina border, along atlantic coast to florida, and along the gulf of mexico

Coolest Predator Adaptation

The komodo dragon is a reptile that does nothing but live on its own and eat. it has rough, bumpy skin like an alligator, a slender mouth, and a long tail. It has long claws and its feet look like our hands, but on the wrong sides so our pinkies are his thumbs. It has a sensory eye on the top of its head for the different light that hits it. It also uses it to tell the diffent time of year. Its teeth are miniature saws, much like a sharks, and grows up to 200 new teeth a year. It has 2 ear holes, but it is deaf and uses his nostrils and toungue to smell his prey. it can smell decaying meat from up to 5 miles away. Their saliva has 40 different bacteria and an anti-coagulant, which keeps blood from clotting, in it.  When a prey is bitten by this creature, it will continue to bleed and eventually die because of the anti-coagulant. the komodo dragon will eventually catch up to it and then star eating it. The Komodo dragon can get up to ten feet long and weigh up to two hundred pounds.  It can also run up to fifteen miles per hour. (3)

Common Name: komodo dragon
Scientific Name: veranus komodoensis
Where does it live?:
islands of komodo, Rinca, and western part of of flores island in indonesia

Coolest Prey Adaptation

Hagfish have eel like bodies and can grow up to 32 inches long. its body is covered with glands that emit a sticky slime. This slime is reinforced with tiny fibers, which makes the slime strong and difficult to remove. A predator can easily suffocate if a hagfish's slime gets in its gills. To get the slime off of itself, it ties itself in a knot and then passes the knot down the length of its body to wipe the slime away.

The hagfish has gruesome feeding habits. it attaches itself to a passing fish, and bores its way inside.Once inside, the hagfish will actually eat the fish's flesh with a specialized rasping tongue.  It eventually eats the fish inside out. the hagfish is probably the nastiest creature of the sea. (8)

Common Name: Hagfish
Scientific Name: myxine glutinosa
Where does it live?:
bottom of ocean. Founded in Norway, 1747.  Temperate regions in both hemispheres
