Temescal Wash Cleanup Project
Project Name : Temescal Wash Cleanup Project
Description : During the Temescal Wash Cleanup, we arrived at the place at around 8 AM on Saturday morning. We first checked in with everyone, recieved trash bags and gloves, and then were given instructions on what we were going to do that day. The man told us to choose either to go left or right, walk as far as we could, then walk all the way back, filling our bags up with trash on our way. After the instructions were given, a group of us got together and headed to the right, as far as we possibly could go. On our way there, we saw some interesting things such as shopping carts, A LOT of plastic bags, and some plants like mushrooms. We started to pick up small pieces of trash like candy wrappers or food bags. As we got to the farthest point of the little trail, we colleced some larger pieces of trash like a big square box and a tire. We also happened to come across a matress with just the springs left, but it was completely burried under dirt, making it impossible for us to pick it up. As we walked back from the walk, we began filling our bags more and more with clothing, plastic bags, cups, and other various pieces of trash. As soon as we got back to the original meeting area, we loaded our bags into a truck and stopped for a little hydration. After, we picked up a new bag and headed the other direction. On this journey, we crossed a large lake and ended up under a bridge type thing where we picked up some trash like a bucket and a tire. On our way back, we had to cross a big lake (which was pretty hard) and continued filling our bags. The lakes were so nasty! There was trash EVERYWHERE. There were so many cups and plastic bags! We filled yet another bag on that trip, and just like the first, we loaded it into the truck, took a break, then went back out for more. We practically repeated this process again. We did this one more time, only this time we didn't go out quite as far, because our time was almost up. We loaded one more bag each, then got to enjoy a nice lunch

What volunteer activity do you plan on participating in?
During the Temescal Wash, I plan on spending the 4 hours picking up trash around the facility.
Where is the volunteer location?
The location of this event is at the Temescal Wash facility.
When will this activity occur?
This activity is planned to occur on October 22, 2011 from 8 AM to 12 PM on Saturday morning.
What will be your responsibilities?
During the wash, my responsibility will be to go out to wherever the people in charge ask me to go, and pick up as much trash as I possibly can. I am to follow instructions that are given to me, and not try to go against any rules. From my understanding, my job is to get a bag, walk out as far as I can, and make my way back to the begining picking up trash along the way. Then, I will place the bag into a truck, and start the process all over again.
Who will be supervisor signing off on your volunteer hours?
I believe Mr. Pitts, or one of the representatives at the event.
How many hours total do you anticipate participating in this volunteer activity?
Total, I plan on completing a total of four hours of community service.
What do you hope to accomplish?
I hope to spend the full time picking up trash, so that we could reduce the amount of pollution in our area. Because I know that this will happen again, I hope to do the best that I can to clean up the trash that is left at the wash. I want to make a difference in the community, and by giving my time to picking up trash, I hope to do so.

Which organization did you volunteer for?
I spent 4 hours on October 22, 2011 picking trash up at a center called the Temescal Wash.

4 hours
Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
At the Temescal Wash cleanup, my classmates and I arrived at the location at about 7:45 am. We recieved a t-shirt, gloves, and a trash bag. After we were told what to do, we separated into groups and headed in separate directions. We walked as far out as we could, then headed back picking up any trash we saw on the way back. We would throw the bags into a truck and started the process over. After, we took a log of all the different types of trash we found.
What were your accomplishments?
By spending 4 hours picking up trash, i successfuly picked up several bags full of trash, and other large objects like a tire, a shopping cart, and some pots.
What did you learn?
I learned that after big storms, all the trash gets washed up, and that is how things end up getting burried. There were some items that were practically impossible to remove, and it taught me that over time, that is what happens with the garbage left behind.
