Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
During my volunteer time I picked up several bags of trash which contained loads of plastic in them. I noticed that plastic in our environment is a huge problem. As I walked around for the first hour everyone including me began to notice that there was plastic intertwined with almost every plant shrub, and tree. In addition to there being tons of plastic, there were many articles of clothing that were muddy and stuck in the ground. The worst part was seeing shopping carts and tires half buried in the sand and dirt. As I came across these items I thought to myself that our environment is in need of desperate help. It gave me good feeling to help the environment and pick up trash. The last few hours consisted of filling up a few more bags full of plastic and trash. On our last run through my partners and I decided to make an extra effort and take back a huge rusty metal barrel back to the designated trash facility. It was difficult, and it caused me to work up a sweat but in the end it was all worth it.
What were your accomplishments?
I felt that my accomplishments included; taking back four to five full bags of trash, looking back at the area we had swept through to see it cleaner, and the biggest accomplishment I felt I had was taking the huge rusty metal barrel all the way back to the camp area. It seemed impossible but when my partner and I finally made it back it was the biggest accomplishment I had out there.
What did you learn?
During my volunteer experience I learned that plastic bags are destroying the environment. I learned the majority of the trash that was out there was plastic due to its ability to latch onto plants and shrubs completely covering them. I never really fully understood how big of a role waste plays in our environment until I was out there surrounded by it. One thing that I was able to take away from this experience is the fact that I now pay attention to what I do with my plastic bags which has led me to use less of them and make sure to dispose of them correctly.

Other Notes

Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs help the environment by using no electricity, no batteries, and last longer than other self-luminous exit signs. Gambassa's "Energy efficiency and exit signs" project curriculum teaches students how to generate income by using available utility retrofit rebate programs to replace incandescent exit signs. Earn while you learn.
