Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
We were given gloves and garbage bags and then we were told to go into the wetland. I picked up trash with Ashley Pierce and Pooja Pate We found trash lying on the ground as well as lot that had been wrapped around trees or buried in the ground. We also helped to dig garbage bags out that had been buried.
What were your accomplishments?
I must have picked up thousands of plastic bags and hundreds of pieces of Styrofoam. We also dug up at least seven shopping carts. We even found strange things such as clothes and construction cones. At the beginning of the day the whole area was covered in garbage that had been washed there during the wet season. When we were finished there was hardly any trash left. All that remained was Styrofoam in the lake which none of us could reach without getting wet.
What did you learn?
I learned that littering adds up. It was so sad to see how an area can be so completely ruined by people's carelessness. It made me want to be very careful that I do not let any of my trash go down the storm drain. I was amazed to discover how much trash there was at the Temescal Wash and it made me wish I could go clean it up every weekend.

Other Notes
It was such a rewarding experience :)

Greentorch photoluminescent exit signs help the environment by using no electricity, no batteries, and last longer than other self-luminous exit signs. Gambassa's "Energy efficiency and exit signs" project curriculum teaches students how to generate income by using available utility retrofit rebate programs to replace incandescent exit signs. Earn while you learn.
