What volunteer activity do you plan on participating in?
I plan to participate in the Save the Waves Beach Clean-Up which is being run by the city of Huntington and Lexie Moomaw, who is helping so that she can achieve an award in Girl Scouts and because keeping good care of the Earth is important.
Where is the volunteer location?
327 Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Beach, CA 92648. While traveling on Pacific Coast Highway I will enter the beach parking lot at 6th Street, right after main street, and meet on the North side of Municipal pier.
When will this activity occur?
This activity will occur on Saturday, April 21st, 2012 from 9:00am to 12:00pm
What will be your responsibilities?
My responsibility will be to show people that we need to care about the earth by helping others pick up trash scattered all along the beach. Especially on Earth Day we should do something to show that we care, but really every day should be Earth Day.
Who will be supervisor signing off on your volunteer hours?
Mr.Pitts my environmental science teacher will be taking a picture in the beginning of the clean-up and at the end of the clean-up to make sure that he knows which of his students attended the service activity.
How many hours total do you anticipate participating in this volunteer activity?
I anticipate that I will be working approximately 3 hours from 9:00am until 12:00pm during the service activity.
What do you hope to accomplish?
I hope to be able to do my part in keeping our Earth clean from trash and no matter how small that part may be, it is all those small parts from different people that come together to make a whole piece. We can't just act like the World is a big dump site, so by showing people that you care, they might learn to care as well.

Which organization did you volunteer for?
I volunteered for the City of Huntington to help clean the beach and for Lexie Moomaw who is trying to achieve her Girl Scout Gold award.

Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
Upon arrival i was told to sign in and then proceeded to get a bag and gloves. Everyone split into different groups and walked along the shore towards the north picking any trash we could find. After we picked up quite a bit of trash we headed back to where we started and put our bags of trash into the back of small truck.
What were your accomplishments?
I picked up a variety of trash, which includes plastic, tar, baseball gloves, sandals, and cigarettes. There were a lot of cigarette butts.
What did you learn?
I learned that if you really look around the beach carefully you can see trash everywhere. It is all around you no matter where you go, and it is all humanity's fault because we don't clean up after ourselves. Some people just throw trash wherever they want, not thinking of the harm these pollutants cause on the environment. I also learned that there are nasty tar patches on the ground oil rigs leaking crude oil out in the ocean. This tar harms animals and is nasty to touch or smell. I spent quite some time scrubbing the tar off my sandals.
