In hours, how much time did you volunteer?
Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
Upon arrival i was told to sign in and then proceeded to get a bag and gloves. Everyone split into different groups and walked along the shore towards the north picking any trash we could find. After we picked up quite a bit of trash we headed back to where we started and put our bags of trash into the back of small truck.
What were your accomplishments?
I picked up a variety of trash, which includes plastic, tar, baseball gloves, sandals, and cigarettes. There were a lot of cigarette butts.
What did you learn?
I learned that if you really look around the beach carefully you can see trash everywhere. It is all around you no matter where you go, and it is all humanity's fault because we don't clean up after ourselves. Some people just throw trash wherever they want, not thinking of the harm these pollutants cause on the environment. I also learned that there are nasty tar patches on the ground oil rigs leaking crude oil out in the ocean. This tar harms animals and is nasty to touch or smell. I spent quite some time scrubbing the tar off my sandals.
