What volunteer activity do you plan on participating in?
I plan to participate in the "Save the Waves" Beach Clean-Up which is ortganized by the city of Huntington and Santiago High School student Lexie Moomaw as part of her duty as a Girl Scout because of the importance of keeping our planet clean, spreading earth awareness, and getting the public involved.
Where is the volunteer location?
327 Pacific Coast Highway Huntington Beach, CA 92648 While traveling on Pacific Coast Highway parked accross the street near the beach parking lot at 6th Street, right after main street, and met with the group of volunteers on the North side of the Huntington Beach Municipal pier.

Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
As I arrived, we were asked to sign in and then we were given a plastic bag and a pair of gloves. The group of volunteers split into different clean-up crews/teams and walked along the Huntington Beach sea shore and picked up any trash that was found in the sand. After we gathered the trash collected we headed back to the tent and put our bags of trash into the back of a truck. After all of the volunteer's hard work, we discussed to one another about the trash that we collected as we drank several bottles of water.
What were your accomplishments?
A major accomplishment achieved after this activity was the trash that was removed from the beach that can be proven harmful to the environment and the marine life that mistake the trash for food. Some of the many trash items we collected included tar, cigarettes butts, plastic, chip bags, lids and straws, and much more!
What did you learn?
One important thing that I learned was that humans consume much more than we need and clearly do not dispose their trash properly. The trash we dispose is all around us! Disposing of trash inappropriately can cause significant harm to the environment. I also noticed that there were pieces of tar spread all around the sand along the beach from oil rigs spilling crude oil in the ocean. The tar harms the local marine life and is not a pleasant thing to touch or smell. Cleaning up the beach is a simple thing that everyone can be a part of and at the same time make a large impact in making our environmet a better place to live in.
