The volunteer activity I participated in was helping out Arlanza Community Garden, which is currently a garden that is being built and grown to benefit a local income community in Riverside.
Where is the volunteer location?
The volunteer location is located in the community of Arlanza on 8700 Cypress Avenue in Riverside. The garden also happens to be located in a low income community that is facing economical troubles as well as health related probelms like the rise of obesity in the community's children
When will this activity occur?
The activity occurred the morning of Sunday, April 22, 2012.
What will be your responsibilities?
My responsibilities consist of primarily weeding, helping set up a compost station, and planting crops such as avocado trees, as well as guava.
Who will be supervisor signing off on your volunteer hours?
The suppervisor that will be signing off is Samantha Lynn Wilson
How many hours total do you anticipate participating in this volunteer activity?
I anticipated working approximately 4 hours, and winded up reaching my goal of working 4 hours.
What do you hope to accomplish?
I hope to achieve more than what has been done to ultimately help this community get closer to recieving their community garden.

Which organization did you volunteer for?
The organization I volunteered for is called "Child Leader Project" sometimes referred to as CLP, in which creates opportunity for the youth to get involved with issues in the community, and basically take on roles that help demonstrate potential to lead.

Describe your volunteer activities in detail.
The volunteer activities I participated in varied, but primarily it consisted of weeding, starting a compost pile, and planting avocado and guava trees. Weeding by far was the hardest task of all three, because most of the lot consisted of weeds and the work had to be done under the scorching sun. Then helping start a compost pile out in the open, was something that wasn't foreign to me in that Mr. Pitts had taught my Environmental class what components should be included to make a compost successful such as dirt, organic waste(banana peels, paper, etc) and shade. Then the last task I participated in was planting avocado, and guava trees, which was neat because it was my first time planting a tree.
What were your accomplishments?
My accomplishment consisted of primarily helping develop the garden so it may soon receive its inauguration. The reason I considered this in particular to be my main accomplishment is that because the more volunteers that are present the sooner this community that is dealing with many socioeconomic problem, will have a community garden that could possibly ease some problems they are currently dealing with.
What did you learn?
I firsthand learnt that the concepts that I have learnt in AP Environmental Science are actually being applied in the real world such as composting, and reusing. It was good to see people in a community expose methods of sustainability in building a community garden because not only did it expose newcomers to these methods, but it encouraged the individuals that were present to practice such concepts.
