Which sustainability component will your lesson focus on?
What related problem/issue will you present?
The amount of trash in landfills and how to reduce that amount.
What supporting facts characterize the problem?
- Fresh Kills landfill
- Percentage of waste for average household
- Reasons to Repurpose
What solution will you offer?
The perfect solution for this problem would be to eliminate all non-compostable material, however that is not yet possible. In order to prevent materials such as blastic bags or magazines from piling up in landfills, we can repurpose them. My group decided to use these materials to make bracletes. the magazines worked as the beads and the plastic bags as well as hemp acted as the string that tied them together. Repurposing is the most effective way to prevent the constant cycle of consumption and waste.
What action or actions do you want people to take as a result of your lesson?
I hope that students will take away the many benifits of repurposing. Although recycling is benificial, repurosing has the same effect without wasting the energy it takes to recycle. I hope students understand that repurposing can be as elaborate or simple as the student wants. In our presentation we asked students if they could come up with different ways to repurpose and many had ideas ranging from plant holders to pencil cases. I hope that the information i have learned from this project will be carried out by the students I was able to share it with.
