Which sustainability component will your lesson focus on?
Our lesson will focus on re-purposing plastics and growing food locally.
What related problem/issue will you present?
The issues that our group presented to the students of Orange Elementary were the issues of environmental problems due to a lack of recycling by the general public. We also explained the issues with driving to the grocery store and contributing to global warming when they can just walk out in their backyard and pick fresh fruits and vegetables.
What supporting facts characterize the problem?
Millions of people throw away plastic bottles everyday without a thought about where it goes. One plastic bottle take close to 1,200 years to completely break down in a land fill. Plastic bottles not only contribute to poor soil and air quality, but plastic bottles mixed with other trash can combine and form toxic chemicals that can leak into groundwater passing through to a nearby city.
What solution will you offer?
The solution we will offer is that there are many options that can help eliminate the amount of plastic bottles reaching the landfill. If recycling isn't an option for the students, then they can reuse the plastic bottles to create gardens in their own backyard that they can take care of. We also informed the students that it is easier for them to pick fruits and vegetables from their backyard instead of waiting for their parents to go to the store.
What action or actions do you want people to take as a result of your lesson?
I want people to be more environmentally conscious with what they are throwing away. I want people to know just how harmful each item can be in a landfill and almost everything can be recycled or reused in one way or another. I want people to also inform others on the problems we have taught them and spread the word that Green is the way to go.
