Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
My group used vermicomposting. As a hook we blind-folded a volunteer and had them place their hands in the vermicomposting bin and describe what they thought was in the bin. After the hook we described to them what vermicomposting is and explained how America is a nation that wastes a lot of trash and they can help reduce this waste by putting their vegetable, fruit, and herb waste in a vermicomposting bin. We introduced vocabulary words such as biodegradable, compost, landfill, and recycling. We then had the students make a composting bin and gave them worms to put in it. To wrap up we asked the students questions about what they had learned and gave one student the vermicomposting bin.
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
It would be interesting for the students if we had something proportional to the amount of trash we use, as in something visual. It would also be interesting if we had a better hook, I don't know what it would be but something besides having the students put their hands in the bin.
