Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
We started by showing the kids a block that we made out of trash. We explained to them that when the trash isn't recyclced, composted, or put in a landfill, it ends up in the ocean in blocks a thousand times bigger than our example block. Then we explained composting, recycling, and landfill in detail. We passed around a five pund wieght to give the kids a sense of about how much their trash for one day weighs. Then we told them how the trash that we dont recycle or compost ends up in a landfill. We explained what a landfill is, the components, and how it works. We then went on to explain recycling. We introduced a variety of d\facts that were appealing to the children so that they could get an idea of the amount of trash that can/is recycled. After this, we discussed composting. We explained the basic components of composting and what can go in it. We ended our presentation with a game where the kids were split in two groups and were given a pile of trash each; they had to sort the trash into bins labeled "recycle", "compost", and "landfill".
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
The presentation should be practiced before it is presented so that you know exactly what you are going to say because if you don't knopw what your saying you loose the childrens interest and they become disengaged in the activity. Also, you should be prepared to answer and questions that children may you.
