Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
For our earth day activity, we decided on enlightening the students on organic clothing. For the set up of our booth, we had a long table with 10 shirts on it, some organic and some non organic. When the kids came to our booth, we first introduced ourselves. After that, we asked how many of the kids check to see if the clothes they buy are organic. Few to none said they did. After we had delivered our hook, we started to describe the process in which non organic clothes are made and their impact on the enviroment and our health. After we gave the details about organic and non organic clothing, we then moved on to our activity. The main objective of our activity was to show the difference between organic and non organic clothing. we gave the students 40 dollars in monopoly money and told them to pick a shirt off of the table that they liked. After the students picked out the shirt that they liked, we had them unfold the shirt and take out the folded paper inside. Each paper gave a different outcome of what type of impact it had on the enviroment. An example of a non organic shirt choice would read "This shirt will sit in a land fill forever. BAD CHOICE." an example of an organic shirt choice would read "This shirt was made without the use of harmful chemicals, GOOD CHOICE." After each student read thier papers, we then proceeded into our conclusion. We informed the students about how they can be aware when they purchase new clothing. We showed them how you can check the tags to see of the shirt is organic and how you could also tell from the feel of it. We then had each student feel the difference between non organic and organic shirts. Finally we showed them a poster of different organic clothing that have cool designs and are stylish. At the end of our presentation, we asked if they had any questions and handed out a jolly rancher for thier participation.
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
More visuals will be a big improvement on our presentation because students respond well to visuals. Having pictures of huge machines that spray pesticides all over the plants will definately improve the impact of this presentation. Another improvement that can be done to this presentation is to use simpler words, so all grades can understand. and if a bigger word is used, describe in detail what that word means.
