Which sustainability component will your lesson focus on?
Growing and eating local.
What related problem/issue will you present?
Saving gas. Preventing unhealthy eating habits for children growing up in an obese nation.
What supporting facts characterize the problem?
The pollution exerted from driving to fast food restaurants. Also, some kids are unaware of what vegetables are. Lastly, some people only eat fast food, which in unhealthy.
What solution will you offer?
Growing and plantin vegetables in your own backyard is easy. By walking to nearby grocery stores, instead of driving, you are saving gas and the environment from irresplaceable harm.
What action or actions do you want people to take as a result of your lesson?
We want people to go out and make a difference in their lives in order to increase their life quality and the environment around them.
Please attach any supporting audio, video, images, files, blogs, links, graphs or other related to the problem or your solution?
Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
On EARTH DAY my group, 9C, started off by asking the kids 'Who likes vegetables?' and 'How many people eat them daily?' We were shocked at the amount of kids answered yes to both questions. We then played a game where we asked kids to identify the pictures of vegetables we were holding up. We used vegetables such as peppers, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, and beats. We then proceeded to tell them about our activity that we would be doing. We were going to be planting vegetables in our school garden. The kids thoroughly enjoyed this because it was hands on. The kids helped put the vegetable in the ground as we were explaining the compostable components of the peepot. After we were done planting, we gave out small compostable peepots with seeds such as lettuce, carrots, and squash.
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
In the future, our presentation could be improved in many ways. More interaction with the kids and their take on healthy eating today could help solve problems of childhood obesity. More space and hands on activities would also be helpful with the kids understanding of local growing.
