Which sustainability component will your lesson focus on?
The component of sustainability that my presentation will focus on will be water conservation. Water conversation is the idea and practice of actively conserving or saving water that is available to us in order to have it and utilize it for the future. Today there is a serious lack of water that is available for use especially in Southern California where severe droughts and lack of water implementation is a serious threat.
What related problem/issue will you present?
The related problem or issue that I will preent will be the idea of water deprivation and its consequences on not only the human population, but also the glopbal impact. The issue must be presented in such a way to where the audience realizes that this is just not a simple issue with a simple solution, but more importantly a very complicated issue with just not one sloution. The issue of global warming and its consequences on the watewr supply will also be discussed and the facts that go along with it. Once the importance of lack of water is discussed the scope and magnitude of the consequences will be more easliy communicated.
What supporting facts characterize the problem?
The supporting facts that charcaterize the problem are the facts that go along with an increased use of water and water waste. the facts that my group discussed are easliy relatable to the human pysche because they are facts that one can see everyday. Our group foucsed on toilet use and the amount of water that is wasted everyday and then every year by water use. Staggering facts like the fact that every year we waste enough water to fill a large lake will get the audience's attention and hold it to get the message across.
What solution will you offer?
The solution that my group offered was the adjustable flapper that is focused on what we are prezenting which is toilet use. With the adjustable flapper the user can apply the pressure necessary for the flush they wish to use. For instance a light flush will only use the amount of water necessay for that flush in effect eliminating the unwanted excess water use. On the other hand a "heavier" flush will use the amount of water that the user deems necessary.
What action or actions do you want people to take as a result of your lesson?
The action that I would like people to take as a result of this lesson is to, one, become water conscious, and two, implement this water saving technology in their home to save water. If these people communicate the lesson to more and more people then the lesson has become a success. The lesson can be used as a stepping stone for more use of water svaing technology. People may go from water saving technology in their toilet to water saving technology in their faucets or shower.
Please attach any supporting audio, video, images, files, blogs, links, graphs or other related to the problem or your solution?
Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
On Earth Day my group presented the topic of water conservation and went into detail on water conservation in the bathroom. The "hook" that my group presented was enromous and staggering facts that took hold of the audience and captured their attention. With energy and enthusiasm the audience was drawn into our presentation and understood us. Next our group had a water tank bowl from an actual toliet filled with water to show the difference from a regular flapper and a water saving flapper. There was active partcipation from the group and questions were both asked and answered. Along with the tank we had a poster board that went into futher detail on what we were talking about and we used it for reference and pictures that futher explained it. Every person who partcipated got cnady and at the end of the presentation we had a water balloon toss that was tied into the presentation because the broken water balloons represented the amount of water wasted every minute, day, and year. This water balloon toss also served as our "wrap-up."
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
The presentation was a great success, but like most other things it can always be improved upon. In this instance our presentaion could have been better if we had given preparation more time. During the presentation we had to continually run to a faucet to fill water balloons and buckets to keep the activity going and it would have been better if we didn't have to do that. Also, the communication of exactly how the water isbeing wasted and where it comes from would have added to the overalle xplanation and audience comprehesion.
