Which sustainability component will your lesson focus on?
Our presentation focused on solar energy.
What related problem/issue will you present?
Some related problems we presented was the usage of fossil fuels.
What supporting facts characterize the problem?
Fossil fuels are detrimental to the environment because the release harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which then causes global warming.
What solution will you offer?
We presented solar energy as a solution because it is a clean very sustainable form of energy. It can be used anywhere the sun shines and in completely renewable.
What action or actions do you want people to take as a result of your lesson?
In our presentation, we mainly focused on solar ovens as being a form of solar energy. As a result of my lesson, I would like the kids to use the solar ovens we provided for them and also become more aware of other items that can be powered by solar energy.
Please attach any supporting audio, video, images, files, blogs, links, graphs or other related to the problem or your solution?
Describe (in detail) what you presented on EARTH Day. Be sure to describe your "hook," your activity, and your "wrap up" in enough detail that next year's groups will be able to use it and improve upon it.
On EARTH Day, we began our presentation by introducing ourselves. We then gave a breif explanation of solar energy and stated why it was a more sustainable form of energy. We then began our first activity which was a game of tic tac toe. We split the group in half, and read 9 vocabulary words that related to solar energy. Which ever group guessed the word first got to pick either thier X or O and put it on the corresponding word on the tic tac toe board. The winners recieved candy. We then showed them our solar oven. We showed them each part of it and how each of those parts contibuted to heating the object in the oven. Next, we explained to the kids why solar energy was a better source of energy. We talked about how it is clean, renewable, cheap, and can be used anywhere the sun shines. We then closed our presentation by allowing the kids to make their own solar oven. We had the supplies ready and pre-cut so all they had to do was tape. The kids were allowed to take home their oven and were given marshmellows to cook.
Please describe in detail suggestions you have for improving your presentation if it were to be done in the future.
If this was to be repeated again, i would first suggest to always keep the kids active. Whenever we were doing an activity, the kids were very engaged and listening, but when we would just talk, they would daze off and not pay attention. Next, i would suggest to not pick difficult definotions. Try to make the definitions as easy as possible for the kids to understand. Lastly, i would actually have something cooking in the solar oven, to show that it works.
